January 2016

In January, the Troop helped out at a Council Orienteering Event for Cub Scouts called Cub O. It was great to see the Cub Scouts come out and camp in the cool weather, learn how to use a map and compass, and go into the woods and put their recently learned skills to work.

During our monthly campout, the boys learned about Blacksmithing and metalworking. They worked in an actual “Forge” setup like it would have been in the 1890’s. The Scouts learned about properties of different metals, how to heat those metals up and shape them into projects.

We also learned we were chosen via a lottery system for a Philmont Trek in the summer of 2017. We’ve already put together a full crew, and we know they are all looking forward to the trip and an amazing experience.

February we celebrated the 116th Anniversary of Boy Scouts in the United States of America. The troop celebrated in several ways, by giving back to the Church, being reverent, and giving back to the community.

At the Church, we installed the yellow parking stops and did some clean up projects.

Some of our Scouts worked on being reverent by attending Oak Grove’s Scout Sunday Service, while others went to their respective church homes and participated in Scout Sunday there.

ScoutImg_03We participated in Scouting for Food where we went out and collected food and supplies for the Little Elm Area Food Bank, and we had a few Scouts assist Pack 285 with the event. The combined total weight, to include ALL the local units, was over 4,200 pounds of food.

Our campout this month is the Horsemanship Merit Badge. We will be leaving February 26, 2016, to go to Trevor Reese Jones/Clements Scout Ranch near Athens. The Scouts will get to learn about horses, how to care for them, how to feed them, how to ride them, and take them on a 2.5-mile trail ride through the woods.

On February 28, 2016, our next Eagle Scout, along with the help of several others, will begin the building phase of his project.

Thank you, Oak Grove United Methodist Church, for all that you do to support us.
